Money & Values

We’ve learned that what makes people happy is not just more money. Happiness is a consequence of good choices aligned with your values.  The further away you go from what’s important to you, the less happy you’re going to be.

Client Centered

We’re not in the business of simply aiming to help clients earn a great return on their investments.  We’re in the business of making life better for our clients.  And that’s a very different proposition than most other financial services firms because it requires a deep understanding of what’s important about money in their lives.

Most people want more than what they have. That means life is a series of trade-offs, i.e. retire early vs. a nicer home today, private school vs. more vacations to make family memories, or leaving a lasting financial legacy to heirs vs. supporting charitable causes today. Our values and intentions are the filter.  Every person and every family have their own set of priorities.

Helping clients define and articulate what is important to them about money is the first step and one the most important aspects of our service to clients. Doing so helps clients to clearly understand which goals are more important than others, and why.

For example, spending time with people they care about tends to be one of the most important values among our clients.  Sometimes, that means saving for vacations and making time for friends and family right now might take a higher priority than saving extra for retirement.

Of course, we want to know when clients wish to retire and how much they wish to spend. However, what’s important is understanding what a client’s ideal life might look like, why they work, and what they really want money to give them.  The answers to these kinds of questions drive everything we do afterward.  Why? Because when, not if, clients need to make an important decision, understanding their “why” is crucial to evaluating their alternatives.  Purpose should be the compass of financial decision making.
